Ok all, I hope this topic doesn't take us into the nether...

I am setting up a new primary anchor system and have settled on the 22 lb. Bruce. My boat does not have any bow rollers, etc., for ease of use. I have a bracket on my bowsprit for holding a Danforth, but that will not work for the claw-type. How do I store the anchor when not in use? Should I fit a bow roller or tray? Do I stow the anchor in the lazarette? What have you folks done? Will anchoring without any trays or rollers hurt the boat? Will anchoring to one side or the other (where the cleats are) create instability in higher winds? Also, do you use mousing wire or do zip ties work for the shackles?

Kind of a lot, but I am kind of in the dark on these. Thanks for your help!

Chris

Chris,

I'd put a roller on the front. I wouldn't want to be digging under a settee to deploy an anchor in an emergency. I'm guessing the 22# Bruce won't fit in the locker. You could store your Danforth in the settee for an additional anchor for those times you might want 2 deployed or use it as a "lunch hook".

What vintage is your boat? Does the stem fitting include a tang that goes under the rub-rail and about 10" down the bow, with thru-bolts in the bow? If not, I would buy Catalina Direct's integral stem fitting and bow roller to upgrade the strength of your rig while adding the roller. Otherwise, you can add a roller that fits the Bruce--not sure which, but Lewmar makes a bunch, some for specific anchors. (I have a their roller designed specifically for the Delta.) I don't see any other reasonable option for stowing a Bruce in a convenient place. Then add a chain stopper to hold the anchor in place on the roller, and a heavy cleat centered on the foredeck.

I've use both zip-ties and stainless seizing wire on the shackles. The zip ties are, of course, simpler to install and cut off.

When anchoring through the bow roller, I lead the line to the same-side cleat. But there would be less chafe if lead outboard straight to the cleat, without going through the roller.
quote:
Smiling Dog -
Also, do you use mousing wire or do zip ties work for the shackles?

When installing the galv. forged shackles, I lube the threads with waterproof grease, tighten firmly with pliers or a marlins pike, and secure with a small nylon zip-tie. every year or so, which I replace the zip-ties exposed to sunlight.

While deploying and retrieving with this setup, it's possible for the Danforth line to get between the sharp flukes of the Claw and the stem if one gets impatient. When anchoring over night, I usually use a kellet to keep the rode below the keel, rudder, etc. during wind and current shifts.

With my roller (fed from a windlass), when anchoring other than for lunch, I set the anchor and then pull he rode up from below the roller, and cleat it to a bow cleat (leaving a loose loop from the roller to the cleat). Thus, the roller is no longer involved in holding the rode and won't chafe it in any way. (You can see this by clicking on Sarge's picture below--anchored at Block Island.)
