I wanted to replace the g bushings due to what I thought what was excessive 'flutter' in the tiller. I"ve done this before when doing a gudgeon repair so I knew what to expect. After 'helping' the bushings into the gudgeons I went to set the rudder and found it to be extremely 'snug'. I worked the rudder on and the first observation was that the tiller was extremely stiff. At that point I would not have needed to tie it off at the mooring as it was so stiff. I took it out and it worked but it 'squeaked' at extreme angles of steering. Question, will the bushing wear in or should I yank the rudder and smooth out the inside of the bushings to reduce friction?
Words of wisdom much appreciated.

Did your original gudgeon's have bushings? I ask because the bushings are used on the newer style gudgeons and adding bushings to an older set might require relieving either the bushing or the gudgeon. If you can remove the bushing check the clearance on the pintle without the bushing installed in the gudgeon. That way you can determine if the problem is the pintle or the gudgeon. If your not sure if you have the newer style gudgeons, the older style lacked the gussets present in the new style. From your description of "helping" the bushings into the gudgeons it sounds like the bushing might have been compressed when you installed them. You can see the gussets (small support triangles) in the picture below.
I just replaced my lower gudgeon this weekend after having replaced the upper one in the Spring. If the bottom gudgeon had not lined up with the pintles, I could have had squeaking, too, but I have no tightness or noise in the rudder movement.
You might be able to fix the mis-alignment by simply loosening and then retightening the 3 bolts & nuts on one of the 2 gudgeons. I saw a little bit of play in those through-transom holes for the lower gudgeon on my boat.
You could also try loosening and then re-tightening one gudgeon, with the rudder in place, and then the other gudgeon, and that would perhaps re-center the gudgeons around the pintles.
The gudgeons are gussetted and since I have replaced the bushings before from CD I figured there shouldn't be a problem. In response to Sloop or John I had repaired the lower gudgeon previously so my hopes are that it hasn't moved thus not (theoretically) needing realignment. I'll monitor it and give it a once over on the hard which is coming all too soon.
When I purchased bushings a few years back from CD they were way to large for my gudgeons. Are their different sizes and/or are their other sources for the bushings?
