Heya:

For some reason my boat had a vang but no attachment bail on the boom. I just got one. Can someone please tell me how far back from the mast this should be.

Thanks much,
Carlos

Far enough aft so that it intersects the boom between 30º and 45º. 45º would be optimal, but a low boom can make that impractical; further aft than 30º significantly increases compression on the gooseneck and reduces downforce on the outboard end of the boom.

Well I just came back from the boat and remembered this post so I measured mine. 38 3/4 inches from the back of the mast to the Vang's attachment point on the bail. This is for a standard rig with a fixed boom. Hope this helps.

Thanks! Much appreciated.

I climbed aboard an adjoining Catalina 25 and measured it out at 36". I'll put it on when I'm there next. I bet there's a wide variety of spacings.
