A few people around here have cutters on their shafts... I have not yet been nailed--lucky so far. I'm not sure what would happen with a 225 hp outboard and stainless prop spinning at 3500-4000, my normal speed. I can say that seeing the markers at speed in chop with the sun low ahead and reflecting off the water is a challenge. I don't think I've hit one yet. I have no desire to damage a waterman's gear, although at times they put it in pretty stupid places.

Yeah, like the time my wife and I on our C25 picked up a pot smack dab under the Newport Bridge, under the green actually, in the fog with an inbound frighter coming in a night... WTF? I did not retie it...

Checked with my usual crew and another and found only 25% had any idea where the anchor is. Only one other knew how to use the VHF. Now we have two new sentences in the precautions litany before leaving the dock.

Does anyone have a suggestion on mounting a ring in the anchor locker for the bitter end of the anchor line?

It came with two stainless plates for the front and back. I think I might have put some acorn nuts on it to protect heads in the v-berth area. A little Life Caulk is good in case the locker fails to drain.

I laminated, in large print, the steps required to activate the Distress function and attached it to the front panel of the VHF. It is important to go over it, but the numbered steps could help in an emergency.

Since starting to sail single handed on Lake Michigan, every trip out I wear an auto inflating WM vest and a hand held VHF.

Cheap insurance.
