I just purchased a Catalina 250 WK. We are probably going out on the water for the first time this weekend, but as we assembled the mast, boom, etc last weekend it became clear that there was no topping lift.
I have three little munchkins: 7, 5, and 3 years old, and I am a littl worried about dashing their heads open with the boom in the usual run of events, or especially if there is ever a need for an emergency dropping of the sail.
We use a BoomKicker and like it a lot. It keeps the boom out of the way and is a simple device to set up.
Some people feel that a topping lift makes the boom a stronger handhold, when moving about the cockpit at the dock, because the BoomKicker gives when pushed on. We have not found that to be a problem. I like the simplicity of the BoomKicker and not having more lines aloft.
