After a few years away from racing, I'm finally back into it. My Smokin' Hot Girlfriend and I raced our boat last night in the weekly Wednesday night race. We were in the lead until we rounded the second mark for the downwind leg. I'm a bit out of practice, and the wind kept shifting from our rear starboard quarter to our starboard beam, making the whisker pole not as effective. I got passed by the only other C25, and a C22 on that leg. When we rounded the next mark I could never catch them.
Winds were probably 10-12 knots. I find it hard to imagine being able to beat the C22 in anything but 15 knot winds or higher, especially considering all the time I would have to give him. Anyway, the finish was exciting, us and an old Mac 23 or something going neck and neck where we crossed the line just a couple seconds in front of him. We'd have won anyway because he would owe us a few seconds. Also beat an Oday 23 or something by 12 seconds on penalty we owed him.
All in all, an excellent and enjoyable night. Finished in the middle, re-learned some stuff, learned that I need to re-learn a lot more stuff.
Ben - if you are sailing downwind in an oscillating wind, you can keep the pole effective by "rotating" your sailplan. When the wind goes forward, ease the pole and trim the main. When it goes back, trim the pole and ease the main (assuming that you set the pole forward of the shroud). Always keep pole and boom in a straight line. On Canyon Lake we have these winds all the time and I find that this is the best way to deal with them.
