Hi:

Has anyone had any experience taking the transom out and getting it back in? Any big issues?
I've had the side rails out but would like to get the transom out to re-finish it. Any insight would be appreciated.

Think we have a boating term issue here Ed . . . most (if not all) of us here view the transom as the rear portion of the hull, i.e., where he motor bracket, rudder and swim ladder attach.

Threshold? Ah yes, the companionway threshold.

I had a hellacious time removing mine a few years ago. There were about 8 screws under wooden plugs, and two under the companionway rails. It was bedded down extra tight with polysulfide caulk, and I snapped it in two when I pulled it out.

I replaced mine by milling a new one out of 5/4" teak. I later found out that I could have bought one from Catalina Direct.

[but it was fun making a new one]

THRESHOLD! They both begin with a "t". Thanks for the fast reply I think I'll finish "in situ"

Ed, yes, it should be relatively safe to refinish it in place, but tape up the edges with masking tape. Cetol does not easily come off of the fibreglass.

Ed,
I refinished my well-aged, gray, cracked companionway rails and threshold in place after sanding gently with a belt sander and then by hand. I mixed some teak sawdust with epoxy to fix the crack. But the eyebrows came off easily after removing the screws, and I could re-finish them separately.

The side framing that holds the crib boards comes off relatively easily... The screws for the outer boards are inside the bulkhead, under the inner boards that have accessible screws. It's all bedded in brown goop (that Bruce probably found under the sill--gentle, persistent prying with a wide tool is necessary. Polysulfide will make it easier for the next guy.

Dave - I believe you are correct it was the brown stuff. I think they did a movie about that stuff in the 50's, the Blob!

The 89s had greatly simplified trim on the companionway and the threshold was easy to remove. the screws were in plane sight.

I like your porthole for the aft berth! Not much of a view, see everyone's crotch but let's in some nice light I bet!

Ed, I would suggest you remove it to refinish.

I think mine was attached the same way franks was, and my boat is a 1984. It was easy to lift off with a putty knife.

The stuff under it was disheartening, I felt good about cleaning it up and getting a good seal on it with 4200.
