But seriously, all I had to fix was the bottom paint, the exterior brightwork, a few leaks, and she's good as new!
Dave restored a lot of the expensive stuff, like the shrouds and rigging, and I could not have gotten a better engine than the 8 HP Honda. The Genny is in good shape and the interior teak is still looking good.
Hah, Dave, I was reading your list and I remember thinking about item one (toothpaste), that's a good idea, but doesn't really fix the problem, just covers it up, then I got to two and thought...hmmm...why would he do that? Then I read three and finally figured out what you were talking about.
We saw bits and pieces of a lot of that type of obfuscation while we were looking for SL. The most prevalent, was an obviously warm engine, and the most obvious of that was a Carver 33 (I think?), I'd just asked the broker what kind of shape the engine was in. His reply was it'd just been rebuilt "recently". I asked him how the seals were, and he replied the bilge was clean. It smelled fishy, so the very first place I looked was in the bilge under the engine. Obvious staining, then I stuck my head underneath with a really bright flashlight that I'd long since learned to carry for inspecting a boat. He (the broker) had done a really good job of wiping down the bilge, but hadn't reached back much further than a foot or so, there was a distinct line of oil drops from the engine since he'd wiped, and a whole lot more oil further back. I'd specifically asked him not to start the engine before we got there, but the oil pan was warm. Not surprisingly the engine had fired right up when we got on board. Once I saw the drips of oil, I gave Rita the high sign, and we walked off the boat & out of the brokerage.
