My lifelines are showing their age and I am thinking it is time to replace them. The lifeline kit offered by Catalina Direct has a feature I really like. Instead of one continuous line down each side, each side has two sections: one from the bow to the stanchion at the front of the cockpit, and one that runs from the pushpit to this same stanchion. This means you unclip where you step onto the boat, at the front of the cockpit. Here is the link to the kit.

One question: Is the swaging tool shown in the kit up to the task of doing this kind of swages? Or is it better to have the swages done professionally?

I've been looking at this kit as well. My only reservation is based on a recommendation by Practical Sailor that lifelines be made from un-coated wire to aid inspection and keep water from being captured leaving the wire wet (and corroding) for extended periods of time. Does fresh vs. salt water affect how big an issue this is? I imagine so. Does anyone have experience or informed opinion on this? Coated wire has been the norm for a long time without getting a reputation as a bad solution...

I installed the lifelines kit on our C22. The kit is great, the tool works very well and the new gate arrangement is a big improvement over your stock setup.

The white plastic coating on our lines were cracked and looking pretty sorry. So I removed the coating, inspected them and found no issues with them. I was told they would get too hot in the sun, but I live in Michigan so that has never been a problem. Sailing in the Great Lakes you may find a lot of things in the water, but salt is not one of them. If the new gate is the reason you are looking at the replacement, go for it. However if your main concern is cosmetic, strip off the coating and inspect what you have first.

Todd, As far as coated or uncoated wouldn't be an issue for me. The original lifelines have lasted 25-30 years. Put a new set on and they will outlive the boat or at least for as long as I will own it.

If you have to change the lines the CD set looks like an improvement -- but -- I fully agree with Scott's observation.

I think it would be structurally unsafe unless you also add the gate stanchion.

Seems to me as though both configurations are structurally the same with gate latched.

And with gate unlatched both are structurally unsafe. Or am I missing something?

I do like the stanchion with the brace. Who makes them in the C25 size?
