So back in October Kim and I looked at a Ericson 33 to move up to. I had very big eyes at the start of this project and items are now coming into sync as I look into all of the systems on this kind of boat. As 1/2 owner I have a small list of stuff to get done by spring, and it keeps growing day after day. The step up was huge for us, this is our 4th sailboat to own, and from the 20 ft C Scow to the Capri 25 it was a huge step.
I started this blog to take photos of every thing we do to the boat, the first step was to get everything off of the boat and start cleaning the interior, the weather was 34 to 37 with 20 knot winds, the interior was warm and the trips to the car were cold, but we got everthing off. The cushions were aken to Tulsa to be re-fininshed with new material. We picked a dark blue sunbrella material and it was the fist large item taken care of. There are 14 cushions, with the smallest being a 24x48 and growing in size to 7'x4'. I am looking forward to our first night on her.
The interior teak and Holly flooring needs to be totally replaced, it has rot in 3 sections, and a 1' chunk out by the galley, The sink has rust pits, the stove and oven need a good cleaning at the least, and I would like to replace this to LPG. The ice box is insulated, but we may add a cold plate, the electrical system needs to be gone thru, all of the nav. light work by the masthead, the interior lights come on and several need to be replaced or new wiring. I think there are 20 lights inside. The batteries are new, the nav. station is in great shape, the wood is intact, the wood at the windows need to be replaced with formica material, all of the ports need to be take out and rebedded, 8 total. The boat has A/C and heat, it needs to be looked at as I have no idea where to even get it going.
The exterior of the boat needs a good polish and wax, too many years of sitting. the gelcoat is not chalky so that is a big plus in my book, there are a couple of area that need new gelcoat from the usual dock. The standing rigging is in good shape, I need to get a chair and run all of the rod rigging. The halyards need a good cleaning, and replace anything that looks bad.
The boat is being hauled across the lake and will be lifted out for inspections, power wash, and new bottom paint, 400 to lift 55 per ft to paint.........22 boat units.
The good news, there are 5 sails with the boat, the 100 is brand new, the 150 is brand new, the 130 is on the forstay, and the main is under the cover filled with mud dobbers.
As stated before I have a small book of items that need to be gone thru, The next time you are looking at the back of one of the sailing mags, and think that its time to get another boat think about....
Bottom Paint Hauling for survey Inspection of every system Electrical Mechanical Plumbing
Anything that has a hose needs two clamps, every thru hull needs to be replaced or tested, and every project cost $1000.00. We are at the very start of this project restoring this boat and I am so happy that we are doing it the right way. My wife is giving 100% effort and is getting dirty (never happened before) We are looking forward to the summer months sitting on our 33 and relaxing watching the sun set and rise the next morning.
