My Christmas present this year was a Tiller Pilot. I am wondering if anyone else has installed one on the 25 and can offer any pointers. Just trying to avoid any mistakes if possible. It looks pretty straightforward, but I've thought that before...
Steve, welcome to the forum. If you search the archives you'l find a number of posts about a number of folks, including me, have installed their auto pilots. There is a dedicated forur search in the upper right hand corner of the page, and a Google based one on the left hand side of the page. Both work well although I tend to use the dedicated one more than the Google one.
Thanks. I found some useful posts. Being a guy I always like pictures. Seems the best thing is to install on the port side to preserve access to the motor and reverse the ST1000 operation mode per instructions. I'm trying to avoid purchasing the extension, so I'll probably install on top of the "fuel door" (I'm sure this isn't the proper term) and keep the wiring connection inside the compartment. (humm... fuel and electric connection) Without the boat here it's difficult to plan much further. I did breakdown and read the directions. After all, it's cold and raining and January.
Steve, mine is port side, but I mounted the short extension on the vertical backrest/coaming wall. I unscrew the extension when I'm not using the tillerpilot, so I can raise the fuel locker lid or sit over there. It's not hard to run the wiring under the coaming -- you can access it through the port locker.
Steve, My engine is on the port side so mine is mounted starboard but I thought my experience might benefit you. The coaming wall is not very thick and my auto-pilot has been in place about ten years. The pressure and flexing on the coaming wall, over time, resulted in the mount starting to cut a hole through the coaming. I used a small (4x6) piece of starboard material over the original mounting location to strengthen it and that corrected the issue. You can see the piece of starboard in the picture below.
Mine is attached to the underside of the tiller with a bracket that lets the unit set right on the top of the locker lid. That way I didn't have to use an extention. The barrell tat it sets in is epoxied right into the top of the locker lid. Works very well and is down low out of the way
Congrats Steve and you will find the auto pilot extremely helpful especially if you do solo sailing. I did the install some time back and the only difficulty I recall was the wiring of the connector and whether is was color based of the tiny wires or getting them in the correct position or my needing glasses for close up work, I just can't recall. But it went fine in the end and to this date can't see not having one. Good Luck, Steve A
