OK SF Bay C250 owners, time to get out and race. By asking nicely, I managed to get the base rating for a stock 250 changed from 198 to a more competitive 225 (C25 FK rates 222 here.) I guess nobody races these things around here so that 198 was a leftover best guess from 1996. ouch! That'll give me an extra 9:45 head start in next weekend's Three Bridge Fiasco: http://www.examiner.com/x-3070-SF-Sailing-Examiner~y2010m1d12-132-entries-and-counting-for-the-Three-Bridge-Fiasco

If you win that race, they'll change it back!

David - I think that you got short changed. Most venues have the C250 at 228 or 231.

Relative to what? US Sailing shows a mean rating for the C250K of 225 vs. 228 for the C25FK. Here in NorCal the C25FK rates 222. At 225 for the 250K that's a six sec/mi advantage over the C25FK relative to the published means. Note also that this is a rating with spinnaker. Do you still think I got short changed?

The C25TR normally rates at 223, the SR at 228. At 225 for a C250 the differential is still not enough for a fair competition. JMHO.

It's all relative, Derek. C25 tall rates 216 here. That makes my differential 9 seconds/mile. If in your area the C25 tall is 222 and the 250 is 228 to 231 as you say, that's a 6 to 9 second difference. So what's not fair? Am I confused? Maybe we're all just faster here in California?

If every other boat is slower than the national average, then your number is fair.
It looks as though SoCal is the opposite of the NW PHRF which is always at least 10% higher than elsewhere.
BTW here on Canyon Lake we pick 5 other venues around the country which have similar winds and run similar courses. We average these to get our ratings. It's a system that has worked for us for over 30 years.
