It may be early since most of us are still sailing but here is a new virtual race:

Join the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race!

Dear Virtual Sailors,

Remember, how in late spring, you bristled with anticipation; the last leg of the virtual Volvo Ocean Race was about to begin.
Virtual Regatta offers you another opportunity to don your oilskins and board a 68 foot clipper for another race around the world. The second leg of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race, between la Rochelle and Rio de Janeiro, sets off this Tuesday, September 22!

This is the only around the world race which, step by step, is open to all. The crews are composed of a professional skipper and a crew of amateur, or even novice, sailors.
14 stages spread over ten months are scheduled to race according to the following schedule:

Leg 1: FINISHED, linked Humber (UK) - La Rochelle (France)
Leg 2 : 22 September 2009 La Rochelle - Rio de Janeiro(Brazil)
Leg 3: 27 October 2009 Rio de Janeiro – Cap Town (South Africa)
Leg 4: 22 or 23 November 2009 Cap Town – Fremantle (Australia)
Leg 5: 03 January 2010 Fremantle – Singapore
Leg 6: 02 February 2010 Singapore – Qingdao (Chine)
Leg 7: 02 March 2010 Qingdao – California (USA)
Leg 8: 11 april 2010 California – Panama
Leg 9: 12 May 2010 Panama- Port Antonio (Jamaica)
Leg 10: 22 May 2010 Port Antonio – New York (USA)
Leg 11: 06 June 2010 New York – Sydney (Canada)
Leg 12: 19 June 2010 Sydney – Cork/Kinsale (Ireland)
Leg 13: 9 July 2010 Cork – Ijmuiden (Netherlands)
Leg 14: 9 July 2010 Ijmuiden – Humber (UK)

This attractive event covers a total distance of about 35 000 miles around the planet!
Like the Volvo Ocean Race, your final score is the sum of your 11 best finishing score, your three worst stage scores will be discarded from the overall score. Go ahead, join the race!

Leg 2, La Rochelle - Rio de Janeiro

Departure from La Rochelle, France

Tuesday, September 22 at 09h00 BST

Arrival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

No course marks will restrict your choice of route, so let your imaginations go!
The finish line will close on Monday, October 26th at 19h00 BST. If you have not completed the course, your boat will automatically be moved to Rio de Janeiro, and your position will be the one you had just before teleportation.

Steve Milby won that leg by days. Me and Loonsong came in within minutes...not in that order. The others that mutually friended us I have not identified.

This race seems to be less shifty than the Volvo race thus not as much attention is required. I hope they add the Pro sails option at no charge like before.

Next leg is 10/27.

I got a late start since we were on a charter in the BVI. Didn't mind missing the virtual for that.

The controls seemed better this leg. I think they worked out a few of the bugs. I would like the pro sails option but don't really want to pay for them. (not unlike real life :))

Leg 5 begins Jan 3!

You might have noticed that I have two cyber boats racing now - Captiva Wind, and Captiva Wind 2. The former has all the bells and whistles, including the racing sails, and the latter is the plain vanilla version. Even though CW2 has slower sails, it seems to be competitive with the faster boats. Obviously, you can't just follow the other boats around the race course, because they'll beat you with their speed. You have to pick a different course. Currently, CW is leading CW2, but not insurmountably, and if CW makes a mistake, CW2 could easily beat her. One big difference is that CW2 has no autopilot, and requires more attention. It's interesting to sail both boats and to see the contrast between the possible courses for the two boats.
