The Honda 9.9 seems to be the engine that most of us have on the 250. I need to replace the water pump and have a question before I tackle it myself. Once I drop the lower unit and remove the extension cover, is the water pump housing easily accessable from that point or does it mean the components below that (the prop shaft, thrust bearings, ball bearings, etc) need disassembly too? I'm a handy guy but unfortunately I've never seen this done before. Taking on that gear case looks a little intimidating. I have a manual that covers many years/models of Honda and it is not nearly as clear as it ought to be. Any advice please!
The hardest part is breaking loose the screws holding the lower unit and releasing the shifting rod from the shift linkage under the engine cowl. Once you get into the lower unit the impeller housing is easily accessible. If I recall correctly you do not have to open up the gear case. The impeller housing sits on top of the gear case. There is a bearing that sits just below the impeller that you should check also while you are in there. Just rotate it and make sure it is not growling or binding.
I did this a while back, but don’t remember the total sequence I went through. I do remember that it wasn’t all that hard of a job. One piece of advice I will offer is to buy the shop manual.
