I bought one of the 5 or 6 gallon plastic gas tanks and the vent valve on the cap was stripped and would not seal and man did that make a mess. It was as though the oil/gas mixture was venting off out of that fantail locker and left a black mess that adhered to the fiberglass all around the locker top and on the side of the seats. It was an insidious slow built up of black that was difficult to clean off. Using rubbing compound, comet, soap and holey moley to get it out of the fiberglass. My topsides are pretty bad though, I never get them clean and waxed, so the dirt goes right in.
My resolution this month is to get the boat cleaned and waxed.
To make a long story short ( as though I could ) I learned:
If you leave the tank near full, and your slip has a lot of large boat traffic, and you leave the Boating World gas tank vent open it will make a black mess.
I bought a new gas cap from WM for about as much as I paid for the tank, and I expect it will work without spillage…

It's best to leave the vent closed so the tank doesn't inhale and exhale moist air as temps go up and down--whereupon it condenses on the walls and the ethanol in the gas absorbs the moisture and later releases it to the bottom of the tank ("phase separation"). The trick is to remember to open the vent...
