I need to add a winch to the trailer for my Catalina 250 Wing Keel. If you have a trailer for a wing keel and are happy with the winch please respond with the pull capacity and/or make and model.
I have a wb rather than a wing but did replace the Fulton winch that came as origional equipment on the TrailRite trailer. The Fulton was a 2000# rated two speed I believe and I replaced it with a Dutton Lainson 2500/2600# rated winch. I end up lifting (winching)the boat a foot or so up onto the bow roller when loading it back onto the trailer and bent the housing of the Fulton. The Dutton Lainson has (at least the one I got does) a much heavier guage steel housing then the original equipment Fulton did and has worked good. I wouldn't know how to compare loading the wb with loading the wing keel but I personally wouldn't go with less than a 2500# rating and would compare the thickness of the housing on the different models.
Edit: I bought the 2600 lb two speed winch and like it quite a bit. if nothing else, Rita at 5' & 120 lbs or so can crank the boat up relatively easily if slowly, in low gear. Same with raising and lowering the mast.
I've learned to keep the boat in as deep as I can while winching it up (I wear chest waders), that helps get the bow snubbed up while keeping the wing off the rear of the trailer till I pull forward. I still rarely get it all the way up.
