When attaching or unhooking the Schaefer furler on my 2004 C250 I always have a devil of a time getting the pin in or out, because the bracket where the pin goes thru is somewhat spring loaded and has to be held out about 1/2 inch to line up with the hole for the pin. Sometimes it is all two or three of us can do to get it in or out. I have tightened the winch strap as much as possible when stepping the mast and also loosened the backstay, but it is still a Pain! Why is this so hard? My final solution is to clamp a small needle nose vise grip on the bracket to try to hold it out that 1/2 inch so it will line up with the hole. I haven't tried this yet, but I will in several days when I step the mast again. Roger

Roger, you have to loosen the upper and lower shrouds also. You would think the pressure comes from the backstay, but that's not the case. I have the CDI furler and that is the only way to reasonably detach/attach.

Dave is right, all the shrouds on a 250 pull the mast aft. Loosen everything up and it will work.
