Hi, I would like to put together a C250 Operarating Manual for my boat. I don't want it to have information regarding how to sail, but just data specific to this boat - systems on board and how to use them, pre and post-sail setup to use as a checklist, and any other unique characteristics of this boat that should be included. I am sure it would be a 'living' document as things change and missed items eventually get included.
So my question is - has anyone out there been industrious enough to have already created something similar? If so, are you willing to share it?
It sounds like you're describing an improvement based on the Owner's Manual. It describes the systems, rigging, etc. That might be a good place to start. I'd be interested in seeing your ideas for additions.
John - this is a great start and invaluable - thank you - I should have looked in the manuals and brochures area. DUH! Do you know the originating source of this - was it from Catalina?
John, We put together a large three ring binder that sounds very much like what you're describing.
Inside we have: Laminated cards from Davis for "suddenly in charge" should we become ill or some other type of emergency. There's also a radio use one explaining how to call for help, plus rules of the road, how to start an outboard, etc. These are the first two cards in the book so they're easy to find, and we always tell our guests where they are. From there we have our rigging & de-rigging step by step pages, leaving the house page, leaving the dock page, returning to the dock, anchoring, etc. Then come the manuals, the boat's (same as yours, just older), engine, auto-pilot, GPS, VHF, dinghy, instruments, etc. Each of the manuals are kept in their own see-through plastic holder thingies (I'm sure there's a correct term for them but it's escaping me), so they're easy to locate by just flipping through the plastic holders and picking out the relevant manual, checklist, etc.
Inside we also keep a small planisphere (star finder), simply because it's a convenient place to keep it (we have a much larger one as well).
I also keep a directory on my laptop with all the relevant manuals in PDF form should I need a reference while I'm at home and away from the boat. I don't have all of them because some of them predate PDF technology (or at least aren't offered by their respective manufacturers), and I haven't bothered to scan them, although I should. It's easy enough to put together your own PDFs from scans (I can provide sources and instructions if you're interested).
We also keep a notepad in the book rack to allow us to write down things we need, have used up, or want for the boat, then just tear out that page, fold it up in your wallet, and it's there next time you're wandering around WM or wherever.
