Okay gang. When I step down the mast on a C-25 - how can you tell the difference between a Stainless Spreader Socket and an Aluminum one? Will it be very obvious?

Yes,

The stainless sockets will more or less be shiny. The aluminum sockets will be very dull.

Also, the stainless sockets have a visible weld between the mast plate and the tube, while the aluminum sockets are one-piece castings.

Pinch me. I think the C-25 I made an offer on has upgraded spreader sockets.

What do you guru's think?

Yes, it looks like you have the stainless brackets.

Yep, those look like the same ones I helped another member install a few months ago. Getting the two pieces of pipe inside the mast in the right orientation was tricky, but ultimately doable. I think it only took us two tries to get it right.

By 1985 (my boat), Catalina had switched to the stainless. I don't know how much earlier it was.

My '82 has the stainless steel spreader brackets, but I do not know if they are original. I suspect they are, however.
