Ahoy! After being a C-25 Tall Rig owner for many years, I feel the need to ask a stupid question. What are the dimensions (luff, leech, foot) of a 150 Genoa for my C-25 Tall Rig? Thanks to the Admrial (don't tell her I said that) my genoa didn't survive 70mph winds last night. So, I'm going to be on the market for a new furling genoa either 150 or 135. I just don't have my manual with me and wondered if anyone could tell me the measurements and save me a trip to the boat? Long time reader, first time poster! Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Hi Jim, The dimensions will vary a bit depending on how high off the deck the sailmaker wants to put the clew corner. 150% relates to the LP (line perpendicular to the luff) from the luff to the base of the mast (this LP is 100%). So, different sailmakers will have slightly different dimensions for a similarly described sail. TheSailWarehouse.com for instance quotes: luff 31.5 ft, leech 29.2 ft, and foot 17.5 ft.
Of course, if the sail is on a furler, the clew corner is almost always carried higher off the deck - - changing the dimensions yet again.
Thanks folks! I knew there was some variation depending on hank on or furler type. It was just difficult to get a measurement on a shredded sail! I appreciate your imput. What a great forum! Now to compound my question... I'd love to get your thoughts on sail manufacturers.
I'm a cruiser, not a racer and my last sail survived over 10 years, so I do take care of them. I'm getting quotes on a Doyle but I honestly don't have any preference as long as it catches wind and is UV protected. Any thoughts?
If you want to stay with dacron and want a better sail, I'd recommend Ullman of Ventura. Gary Swenson does a great job at a reasonable price.
If price is the main thing - - thesailwarehouse.com They put out bids for standard sails during the "slow" season and many different sail lofts bid and make their sails. I bought a really nice Rolly Taskar storm jib from them several years ago. Top quality at a very good price.
The 31.5 ft luff mentioned above is for a hank-on 150. Their furling 150 for a C-25 TR is now labeled as a 145 and will have a luff of 30 ft, leech 28.3 ft, and foot of 16.8 ft. The LP will be 15.1, all according the The Sail Warehouse web site at www.thesailwarehouse.com.
National Sail Supply in Florida is another Rolly Tasker dealer. I've had good experiences with both.
However, the general attitude (according to others on this forum) seems to have shifted more toward the 135 for a general purpose furling headsail because it appears to hold shape better when partially furled.
I've read good words on this forum frequently about Ullman at Ventura. Also, I've met Spike Boston of Boston Doyle (he has raced his S2-7.9 here several times and had devoted customers here). He must make a good product, since he swept the Nationals here recently.
Have you checked the swap meet section? There is a guy selling a 2008 Ullman furling 135 for a tall rig C-25?
