anyone know how to get the old eyebolt out of the keel. I have the new fitting from CD and would like to install it without breaking the old bolt in the keel.
Assuming the problem is it is rusted or seized, the best penetrating lubricant I have found for loosening a bolt is PB Blaster. Hands down. It can be found at most hardware and auto supply stores.
Just last weekend I attempted to remove mine and install the retrofit kit that I bought from Catalina Direct. I removed the paint buildup around the bolt and applied some penetrating lubricant. I forgot if it was PB Blaster or some other. I tapped it a few times with a hammer and let it sit for an hour or so. I then put a wrench to it and could not get it to budge at all. I even bought a pipe to fit over the wrench to use as a breaker bar, but I decided not to attempt to use that fearing I may just shear the bolt eyelet right off. I'm somewhat torn with what to do, but decided to just leave it as is. If I sheared off the bolt, I would then have a HUGE project in having to drill and tap the hole when there currently isn't space under the boat for that. This would mean having to remove the keel and either paying someone to drill/tap or acquire the tools myself which is a lot of work, time, and money that I really do not have right now. Good luck with yours.
If it won't come out it must be OK. I had the same experience as Justin and tossed the new fitting in the drawer. The angle of the cable as it passes through the glass tunnel in the hull is critical so redrilling elsewhere is not a good option.
I have found for really frozen bolts that applying Blaster over a period of a few days, not hours, usually does the trick. Sometimes that's hard to do if your boat is not nearby.
