It is inevitable, but having worked nearly 13 years in the Arctic on climate change beginning in 1987, I have really mixed feelings about the events that led to this...
From the 11March UK-Halsey Newsletter:
"UK-HALSEY SAILS GOING OVER THE TOP – OF NORTH AMERICA The Open Passage Expedition has set June 6 as its target departure date from Victoria, Canada, in its voyage through the Northwest Passage. Cameron Dueck, team leader of the 4-member team, delivered a new UK-Halsey mainsail and furling genoa to SILENT SOUND in March as the team gets ready for their adventure. The team has added a few members as the expedition nears, including a shore-based scientific advisor to help them understand the signs of climate change. The expedition’s goal is to observe how climate change is changing Arctic communities, and then re-tell that through a documentary, book and other creative mediums. “The sailing will be a challenge, we know that, but we’re also trying to spend some time getting to know the place and the people. That’s always the appealing thing about sailing in a new place for me,” Dueck said. The expedition is still trying to raise sponsorship support, both in funding and equipment. In particular, they are looking for clothing, electronics and a satellite communications partner. The project has already been featured in a national Canadian newspaper as well as a Hong Kong newspaper, with radio interviews in both continents set up for this month. Traffic on the project’s website [url="http://www.OpenPassageExpedition.com/"] will grow even faster in the coming weeks when the expedition announces its partnership with a major science/travel media group. “It’s a tough sponsorship market, but we’re going ahead with our plan and we’re very excited about the partners we’re bringing in,” Dueck said. Direct Energy, one of the team’s sponsors, is helping to make the voyage carbon neutral. The expedition has also just translated its site into German and the team doctor, Tobias Neuberger, is looking for sponsors in that market."
This is great news. We have wanted to cruise the ICW but the Admiral didn't want to sail all the way down the Pacific coast and thorugh the Panama Canal. Now we can just go up and around.
On CBC Radio yesterday the had a program on th eeffects of development on the residents of the far north. Specifically the program focused on native youth in Alert Bay - the northernmost settled community in Canada. It was sad to hear that there are only 3 people left who speak the indigenous language, and that so many traditions are lost. Made me think of a friend who went to Vietnam and came back woth a T-Shirt that said "I Beat MacDonalds to Vietnam" not much is left of the world that hasn't been trampled with "Civilized" ideals. I fear for the North and what will happen to it as it continues to be explored, exploited, and changed.
I like to think that we (canoeists, sailors, cruisers, explorers, etc.) who have the ability to penetrate the corners of the globe that are difficult for others to imagine can maintain the traditions and culture of these places, but our very appearance in the lives of people who have such different cultures changes both us and them forever. We chose to be changed, but the people we appear to never asked us to come...
When canoeing, especially in remote areas, I always carried a pack of cigarettes and some chewing tobacco. Although I don't smoke, I had more than one significant experience with it in native communities. Similarly, carrying small gifts goes a long way. Even though our First Nations communities have been severely westernized, there are traditions to be respected and I wonder how many of them I have slipped and broken the rules on.
