Was watching the Weather Channel the other day thinking about what it's like for all you southern Californians - what's the story with the Santa Ana winds?
The winds can be pretty fierce in the hills, but what about when they're blowing offshore?
I'd imagine sailing on a beam reach out of So Cal on the Santa Anas would be pretty exciting.
With Catalina Island and the Channel Islands, what's it like when the wind's up?

Right near the coast the NE Santa Ana winds usually cancel out the NW onshore breeze with the result - no wind. Sometimes the Santa Ana breaks through in the late afternoons.
Offshore and especially up north it is a different story. Catalina and the Channel Islands can get fierce winds and waves on what is normally the lee side. This can cause serious damage.
Today - Monday 1/12 it is forecast to be 85F at my house. In the high 70s at the beach. Saturday we had no wind and hot dry air so I cleaned the inside of the boat and sunned all the cushions.
I am in Newport-Orange County- north of where Jim is. We had very strong winds Sat and Sun. Gusts up to 45mph. Today, Monday, is hot with a small craft warning, gusts up to 30mph. Jim is correct re Catalina Island. I never plan those trips during Santa Anas(Nov-March/April). Steve A

My buddy in Santa Rosa, south of the SF bay, said they were getting 83 degrees. I love Newport CA and Marina del Rey. Hey, I think my customer in SoCal needs a visit right about now . . . after I get back from South Dakota!

I miss San Diego sometimes, especially the sun. We haven't seen the sun in more than a month here, and no apparent end in sight. We're currently sitting under a giant high, but it's trapped moisture with us, so we have "mist" instead of sun. A few years back the town I lived in went 164 days in a row with no sun. Dismal at best, and when there's no sun, I really have to get motivated to get up off the couch & do anything. Can you say Seasonal Affective Disorder?

It's not nice to gloat! Supposed to be in the teens here tonight and down to 7 tomorrow night, once the mid-west nastiness gets here. How are you guys up near the northern border holding up?
I was talked in to staying in Ohio until friday - it was 9ΒΊ this morning and its supposed to actually get cold tonight. If my wife had been heading south before me instead of next week, she would have been on a plane yesterday when it when it was 30ΒΊ. Now I'm freezing while she finishes packing the stuff I'm taking down for her. Sometimes I wax nostalgic for my youth in San Bernardino and La Jolla.
