We are headed for the Abacos in a couple of weeks for the first time. We are chartering a Sunsail yacht. Anybody have any good advice, good itineraries, places to dive, places to anchor?

Clay,

I've done several charters there with Moorings and have a good friend who has a house in the Abacos. You're going to LOVE it there! Here's some links to check out:

http://www.drralph.net/index.html (info for first-timers)

http://www.tequilagecko.net/ (same plus trip reports, itineraries)

http://www.usual-suspects-sailing.com/adv-feb02-2.htm (a bit dated but still a great trip report)

http://abacomessageboard.com/ (great forum and links to info)

These should give you more than enough to get started. My only caveat would be that Aug-Oct is the 'off season' due to hurricanes. There are several islands where absolutely nothing in the way of shops or restaurants will be open until the 1st of Nov. Sunsail (if like the Moorings) should be able to help you out with what's open where right now. You'll just need to plan provisioning to be a little more self-sufficient in some places.

Enjoy the trip. . . wish I was there!

Best advice - when you are on cay's with a decent population, find out where the locals go and take some time to grab a cocktail or two off the beaten path.

Green Turtle Cay has a nice dock area, Hawksbill Cay has a very nice anchorage, though difficult to approach after dark.

Don't be afraid to motorsail to make it somewhere on time.
