We live in Galveston. No one on the island was spared from IKE.
Our 25 was at the north end of Clear Lake (kemah) and rode out the
storm without any problems. We have tide risers on our docks at
The Wharf. I feel the springlines I have saved my boat from any
trouble. We don't have power to the marina yet. I went to my old
marina today in Galveston at The Landings. The entire apt project
will be bulldozed. The marina suffered major loss. Only 5 boats
made it through the storm. There are masts sticking out of the
water and you can't even see the coachtops. Many of the boats are
on the hard now. One landed on top of a car and that pic has been
all over the net. There are boats from Payco Marins all over the
highway after you cross the causeway. There are 6 boats now moored
on 61st street instead of in the water.
NOOA has been here and determined the tidal surge was 13 feet from
IKE. Downtown Galveston is a total loss. The best description I can
give of Galveston Island is it looks similar to Hue City after
TET in 68.

John, Gary and all in the Galveston Bay area,
Our hearts go out to you all. Pictures simply cannot convey the devastation of a storm like Ike nor a sense of the amount of work required to recover and rebuild. I lived in Galveston and worked in the Clear Lake area in late 70's - early 80's and my daughter is a BOI. I know how hard the City has worked to recover from earlier storms and from the loss of industry as well as to rebuild its historic districts. To see/hear of the devastation of Ike is heart wrenching.

I have to ask one question out of curiosity, however. Have you by chance walked out on any of the rock jetties on the Gulf side since the storm? I remember following Alicia being awestruck by the fact that the oncoming waves had so neatly removed 1 or 2 granite blocks (1m x 2m x 1m each) from many of the jetties without disturbing any of the remaining blocks. The hydraulic pressure of the water in the gap between the stones (few inches) must have simply blew them out. Nature's power can be devastating but also very humbling.

Gerry,

Thanks for your concern!

I haven't been down to Galveston but if you go to this link during the daytime you can see that some of the mini-jetties around Galveston appear to have come through the storm OK. http://www.galveston.com/webcams/

The Surf Cam probably gives you the best view of the mini-jetty.

Don't know if you remember the Balinese Room but it was completely destroyed. There are only a few of the pilings that remain. It went through several large Hurricanes since the 1920's but Ike left us with only memories.

Gerry,
The rock jettys are still in tact. However, the Balanese Room is
completly gone, Murdocks is gone, and Hooters which used to be the
Ocean Grill is gone. Only broken off pilings sticking up about
3 feet out of the water. Saw people fishing off the jettys today.
The fishing pier at 61st Street is gone and no sign it was ever
there. On a lighter note, Guidos is open for business, as well as
Fish Tales and The Spot.
Gary, have you heard if The Outrigger will reopen or not?. Part of
Merebelles was in a buddy of mines front yard in Clear Lake Shores.

No I haven't heard anything. I heard the Topwater Grill was destroyed too. I never ate there but heard it was excellent.

Sorry to hear about the Balinese Room....another historic icon lost. You also mention the 61st street pier was lost...incredible. One image burned into my memory: I used to run along the beach at 61st early in the mornings. When the circus came to town, they sometimes would walk the elephants in the surf along there. Quite a sight.
Best to you.

Yes I too heard Topwater is gone. Also the road in front of
Noahs Ark is gone, as well as the side road to Clifton by the Sea.
Will miss Friday nites at Noahs Ark. Cold beer, bikers and sailors.
Doesn't get any better than that.
The evil empire (west Marine) is open on 2096. How did Boaters
Resale and Blue Water Ships store fair??

From what I've seen they had little to no damage. It seems that most of the damage on the North side of Clear Lake and Watergate eastward. As I've said before, South Shore Harbor came through without a scratch.

My sincere condolences to those that lost their boats (or more), and congrats to those that make it thru Ike OK! We are one of the lucky ones in that our boat, Confetti, make it thru Ike without a scratch!!

We have kept Confetti at the Watergate Marina since we brought her here to Houston in 1980, and weather Alica in 1983 also in Watergate. Alica had a storm urge that left a waterline on the pilings at just short of a 12 ft rise. We had to move to an older dock (pier 6) since Watergate is slowly converting to floating docks, and pier 6 has much shorter pilings (only about 8-9 ft), so I did not expect to find Confetti when we returned, but there she was!!!!

Great pictures posted on the listserver by the way, but pictures simply cannot capture the sense of devastation in the Clear Lake area, and Clear Lake is NOTHING like the devastation down on Galveston and the Bolivar peninsula......

I have been inactive on the listserver for quite a while, but its nice to still have a boat and will be getting back into being active!

Cheers! And again my condolences to all that lost so much to Ike!

Chuck

Welcome back, Chuck! It's good to hear that Confetti made it safely. You've taken good care of "Old No. One!"

Great to hear from you, Chuck! It seems to me if a hurricane is bearing down on Confetti, Frank Butler should just hire a Sky Crane to whisk her to safety!

Hiya to Frank, Dave and Steve!

Thanks for the welcome back! This is a really good group to share info with!

After 40 years with the government (20 in the USAF and 20 with NASA) I am planning on hanging up my government cleats right after we fly this last servicing mission to the HST. Our plans are to move to Merritt Island, Florida (we have a house there that we have rented out till we get there). Its near one of our daughters and her family and our grandson. We plan on keeping Confetti at the Manatee Cove Marina on Patrick, AFB and sailing in the Banana River and the Indian River and exploring up and down the central Florida coastline. The water is really nice there (quite a change from Galveston Bay where its too thick to drink and too thin to plow!!).

Anyone have any local knowledge of the water in that area?

Chuck
