Yesterday I had the privilege to sail with Frank Farmer on Pretty Penny. He was gracious to invite on her after I called him wanting to see in person his mods. He took me out on a beautiful Sunday 2 hr sail in Long Beach. I got to see first hand his many additions. The most impressive were his self tacking jib and reefing system. These mods made sailing pure pleasure while not having to leave the cockpit. Catalina really should take a look at and incorporate these, both for safety and also will save them $$. I was also impressed with how inexpensively he rigged his jib sheets to the cockpit. Frank has many more nods, all pretty terrific. I felt fortunate to be live fairly close to Frank and be able to see all he had done and to see them in action. I would suggest other members reach out. It was a fantastic experience. Thanks Frank, Steve A

You're more than welcome, Paul; anytime, just give me a ring. And anyone else in Sou Cal with a 250. I'm in the Long Beach Shoreline Marina, Gangway W, slip #10. Hey, let's organize a Sou Cal 250 fleet and go cruisin' together and trade mod ideas! And check out the General Forum for an exchange of opinions on flushing our outboards. Seems there's no one "right" way.
Excus-ay moi, STEVE. I've been talking with another 250 owner named Paul. Early oldtimers, I guess. I've been wondering how y'all post URL shortcuts. In other words, a single word link instead of writing out the entire http:// According to a Mac forum, this is how it's done:
Does anyone else in this forum sail on Lake Tahoe? (I see a few C-25s and C-250s on the lake, so there must be someone out there who's also in here.)
My wife and I are planning on lots of days & nights sailing on Tahoe during August 13-27 this year; we'd love to sail with some other like-boated folks. (Actually, I'd like to sail, my wife is happier sitting in a nice anchorage with a good book, but we compromise and do a little of both.)
We're hoping for a raft-up on the night of August 13th for the Perseid Meteor shower and the night of the 16th for the full moon. We'll also spend 3-4 days/nights at a stretch sailing and lounging, especially in in or around Sand Harbor, Tahoe City, and/or Meek's Bay.
Martin, your situation sounds like me and my wife. Rats, I am in SoCal but otherwise would love to take you up on offer. Let me know if you ever get down my way. Steve A

We have some flexibility in our summer schedule, but we don't have a vehicle to tow our boat, and thus we're "stuck" (don't pity us too much) on Tahoe for the season.
And likewise; if you and Mrs. A. ever get a chance to tow your boat up to Tahoe, please contact us. Although the wind here can be far from ideal, it's still a beautiful place to be on a boat.

Consider moving your winches to the coamings and you can do all the sail management yourself. Then you are sailing WHILE she is reading. Works great! Do you have a list of the items you purchased for this modification? It looks like a GREAT idea, but I'm running up a bill of way over $1,000 for Lewmar self-tailing winches (#14?), fairleads, fasteners, and extra line.
Do you and your wife ever think about sailing on Tahoe?
By the way, in the 1980s I used to sail my Hobie Cat and sailing dinghy on Fern Ridge Lake, and I'm guessing you guys keep your boat in a slip there.
Martin, we are at the Eugene Yacht Club on Fern Ridge. Sailing at Tahoe would be fun some day.
The winch project only coast about $200. That is for the new Lewmar 7C we use now to raise the main. It is located where the starboard 16ST used to be. The two 16STs were moved to the coamings.
Moving the 16STs to the coaming is one of the most practical mods we have done.
My jib sheets to the coamings mod may not be as first class as yours but it's a whole lot cheaper. Instead of winches, my jib sheets are secured by offshore cam cleats, port and starboard; cam cleats I picked up at a local marine swap meet for five bucks each. I only use 'em for single handing or when I need more foresail "rag" than my self-tacking mod that requires 10% jib furling. Pics tomorrow.
Martin, No trailer here either. Guess we will have to wait for vacation time. RE moving jib sheets to cockpit, I am copying Franks method of cam cleats. I ordered 2 SS ones yesterday. Around $20 each. A lot less than winches. Just too many projects on list. Steve A
