After following several threads here about auto jibs, I bought two small Harken blocks, rigged up some line and gave it a try. Some of you might have picked up on my hand surgery early this year. I've been out only 5 times as I recover. I thought, "There's a great idea to help me out single handing." (literally!)
Although my 130 jib is only out about 80%, I am quite surprised how well this works! No need to work the winches at all. Under 5-6 knots of wind, I wouldn't bother using it, but in 10-15 it works great. Better than I would have expected.
My wife and I invited several friends out and it was a pleasure just using the tiller to get around.
A very inexpensive mod and worth it if you are nursing any kind of injury.

A self-tacking jib can be wonderful--I'm a fan of the Hoyt boom. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">
Several years ago I looked at the hoyt boom. I can see now how it would improve sail shape over the system I just installed.
I was in 12-15 knots of wind last weekend and still had her over pretty hard even with the auto jib. There is a lack of power from the front, can't point as high, but still fun!
Turk, I am gonna have to look into that. I have had a frozen shoulder for some time now and even though its getting better, I dont have full use. Of course I dont go out solo but also have cut down on sailing when taking out others. Can you raise main or do you have a crew member do that? If you can ever get photos or video of the auto jib, I would love to see it. Steve A PS. I tried to do a search on this forum re auto jib but got nothing. Were you referring to another site?

I can't take credit for any of this, I just realized how I could get back into sailing with this bum hand. I'm a racer and I'll tell you this year has been crap! The force needed to pull in the winches was wrecking havoc on my repaired hand. Doc told me to give it up for the season. This auto jib works for me and is a wonderful way to back off on the forces and still be able to sail. That's what is so great about this forum. The exchange of ideas is eye opening sometime.
Go for the upgrade. I used 2 harken small blocks and a quality sail clip.
