Hi all,
We are looking at maybe moving to NJ in the not-so-near future and I have the chance to be up there for a number of days in August. I would like to look around at marinas and living areas and driving distances, etc.

As you may have noticed from various posts, we are used to sailing in the Pamlico Sound, so I'd like to know where the non-ocean sailing areas are. Just looking at a map, I see some areas like Highlands and Ocean Gate but it is hard to tell what it would look like on the water.

As far as marinas, we drove a while back from Amboy to Highlands and saw a lot of marinas but most were full of powerboats. Maybe I am spoiled from Oriental, is it common for the marinas to be 80-90% powerboats?

Mostly I'd like to know where I should drive around and look. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Roughly where in NJ? You have the right boat, as sailboats go, for Barnegat Bay. Take a look at a chart--the water's a bit thin in much of the bay. (Zoom way in on these NOAA Charts.)

Yeah, the water is very thin... There is a ICW extension sorta that runs all the way to NYC, but the bridge heights and very shallow water make it only viable for power boats. Cape May, Atlantic City and then the suburbs of NYC on the Jersey side are really your only Jersey options as far as I know. There are a couple of lakes, which is where Zephyr went after she was sold and trucked there.

I am looking at driving distance to Somerville/Raritan (living, not necessarily the marina; so figure any water from Atlantic City north).

I googled Marinas a few months back but (un)fortunately you get a hit per mile of coastline. So I resorted to zooming in on the satellite pictures to guess if there are sailboats in a marina or how long a ride to open water.

Thanks for the info, I'll try to see those areas next week. I guess the 2'10" draft I have is a good thing.

There's the Atlantic Ocean, but it ain't no Pamlico Bay!

Cruisers in small boats sailing up or down the East Coast need to plan a careful passage along the Jersey shore due to the few hurricane holes.

The same can be said for a lot of the Pacific coast, but some sailors make the best of those conditions and have a blast, as well.

Cate (1983 C-25, Standard rig, swing keel) might say how she likes the Jersey shore for sailing a C-25.

If you were further north (living) I'd recommend the Nyack Boat Club, but that wold be quiet a hike from Summerville/Raritan.
