I like my iCom M2A. It has lots of features, easy-to read display and works great. Not sure if they make it any more. We also have an iCom 304 fixed VHF and like that also.
Had a $ 250.- Raytheon that died and got my $ 29.- Cobra handheld from Hamilton Marine. Yeah, I know, sounds too cheap. It works and, actually, the launch operator at my club is using one, too.
I have a pair of Cobras and they give me a couple of miles, are waterproof, rechargeable with AA backup, and are great for local boat to boat and dingy contact, but I wouldn't use them as my only radio except on a small to moderate sized inland lake. There is a WM Mistral on the Swapmeet.
OK - I just got a new fixed mount VHF Std Horizon for Passage but now I need a handheld. My old Raytheon's NiCad batteries died 5 years ago and I purchased a bunch of NiMH AA rechargeable batteries and wired them up, taped them up and replaced them in the battery compartment. The Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries have a lot of power per weight rating.
The AAs work OK, but still have short charge life - maybe 4 hours with listening use (Ch 16 with high squelch) or for weather radio. I could go to Li Ion batteries, but wiring them in might be a little more of a challenge.
I'm interested in the cheapie Cobras. Anybody got a web-link?
No frills but acceptable performance with a little bit more battery life would be great.
I gave up on the NiCad battery in my older S-H handheld--just use AAs now--they have virtually unlimited shelf-life, and my handheld is just for emergency use. No need to remember to recharge.
