From Call of the Ancient Mariner by Reese Palley, p.160:
"The $14 Solution Sidle up to your friendly pharmacists and get some 500 milligram capsules of tetracycline. Open one capsule and dump the contents into a litre of antifouling paint of your choice (the cheaper the better) Stir well and apply. The tetracycline extends the life of antifouling paints by at least an additional two years. How it works: The presence of tetracycline prevents the formation of "sea slime", which is the necessary precursor to the attachment of barnacles and similar animals. Without the slime, animals can't attach to the hull."
For us "elder" sailors, Reese's book is a MUST READ! He's in his mid 80's and still cruising! I got it on sale at my local WM. It's also available at Amazon and Alibris.
When I was racing I had the bottom painted with teflon, it had copper in it I guess, as you could see sparkly flecks in it. Almost nothing attached to it and so I cleaned it only occasionally. I have the standard blue stuff now, and it's time to get down there and turn my brushes and everything else blue. I never would have thought of applying an antibiotic to the bottom of my boat! :)
Frank, that is pretty amazing. In Newport, they are considering an ordinance to not allow any bottom paint with copper so adding 2 years would be nice. I will look for that book. Steve A
