I have a '79 Catalina 25 tall rig swingkeel "fixer upper" that I need to get rid of. I'd like to keep the trailer, but the boat must go. I gutted it a few years ago, and then bought an '82 Hunter 25, and lost interest in the Cat, so it is just an empty shell.

Some scuba diving buddies would like to sink the boat in a local lake as part of a dive park, and I kinda like the idea. I figure that I can get more for the boat by stripping all the winches and hardware and selling them, instead of trying to sell the whole boat.

What do you all think, sell it as a project, or sell the pieces/parts on ebay?

It would be nice if you offered the parts to the members of this group before you sold them on eBay. However, you can certainly do what you want.
A stripped Catalina C25 without a trailer is not worth much if anything. I would certainly get the proper permits prior to sinking the boat.
I, for one, am looking for a chrome Lewmar #6 if there is one available.

Randall,
If you submit photos on this Forum of the topsides, cabin, cockpit, bottom, bow, stern, masthead, standing & running rigging, lockers' contents, switch panel & electric parts, etc., you could get an idea within a week or two of what you could get chopping the boat.

I would definitely offer to the members first, you have a captive audience here, whereas eBay requires C25 owners to be actively looking for parts. Also you're going to get feedback on the stuff that members would like to have, such as hatches and covers, cabin top, galley parts, head parts, holding tanks, table, shrouds, stays, mast and mast parts, other standing and running rigging, sails, lifelines, bow and stern pulpits, etc. And who knows, maybe someone wants the hull and wants to rebuild the boat.

I would like parts that you might not normally think of selling, like stanchions, hand rails, or the stern pulpit, depending on the year of your boat. Also the boom. You should be able to get good money for winches, blocks, rigging, cushions, teak trim, and so on. Offer it here!

You should get a pretty good response on parting her out... As for sinking, given that a fiberglass boat is an environmental atrocity no matter what you do to get rid of it, if somebody thinks it'll enhance a recreation area, go for it! But make sure to pass ownership to that group--you don't want to be liable for any consequences.

Randall,

I'd be interested in the trailer if you change your mind and want to sell it (as long as it's in decent condition) or if you know of someone else that has a C25 trailer for sale I'd be interested. I've got cash.

I have an '89 wing keel so I believe a swing keel trailer could be modified fairly easy.

Please let me know if you hear of anything.

If you part it out, I'd like to buy the companionway rails that hold the crib boards, if the wood is in good condition with no splits.
Hey, has anyone ever used gorilla Glue on teak? I've got about 5" long splits at the top of both companionway rails.

Yes on the Gorilla Glue, my grab rails split and I used Gorilla Glue to fix them and they are nearly good as new.

If you take them off to varnish, don't put the screws back in using a drill with a screwdriver drillbit. Slow is good.

That's funny...I just did that last week, and guess what? I split my grab rail! Excellent advice. If not a little slow But I repaired w/ 2 part epoxy, which should do as well as gorilla glue.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all of your responses. Of course I will offer the parts here on this site first. I have lots of fond memories of all the advise I got here when I first bought her, and of all the comradarie on this site (much more than on the Hunter site), so if it comes to parting her out I will post here.

Dave, I gotta admit I've been concerned about the environmental and legal aspects of sinking her, but apparently the impromptu dive park is in a lake not controlled by the Corps of Engineers, and several other, smaller things like rowboats and platforms have already been installed there.

As for passing boat ownership to the dive group, I don't really know WHO the registered owner is. The boat is now in Texas, but I bought it while I was stationed in Georgia from a man who lived in Alabama. The boat was in the water in Florida, but was registered in Mississippi, where at the time they did not title vessels that size.

The TX Parks & Wildlife folks told me that I could get a letter from the state of Mississippi stating that they had no claim against the boat, and then I could register it in TX. Around that time I found my Hunter 25 in a transferable slip at my favorite Canyon Lake marina, and the rest, as they say, is history.

TXbigfoot, I did not get an email from you, it must have gone to an inactive email account. I will be glad to let you have first crack at her if you are interested in a true "fixer upper". I didn't hesitate to buy the boat, even though it needed lots of work, because I like messing around with projects. Unfortunately, I have too many projects ('69 Mustang, '62 Chevy PU, '57 Texas Maid 16' aluminum runabout, 22' Starwind sailboat, etc., etc.) and my wife is no longer amused. I'm still on active Army duty and am now stationed in Washington DC, so nothing is getting done on any of them. I will be home on leave in two weeks, and would like to: a) get rid of the Cat 25, and b) get my Hunter 25 on it's trailer and park it where Kite is currently situated.

Thanx

Is it possible to get the letter from Mississippi to get a title here in Tx?
I would like to maybe fix her up if it is easier than my boat that I have now

Randall, if nothing else, just do a $1 bill-of-sale with the dive group, and then remove the registration numbers from the hull (even though they apparently trace back to a ghost somewhere). Then it's their business what happens to it next.

TXbigfoot,

I had my wife get the registration numbers for me today: M14672AF. She said that it might be MI, but she thinks it's M1. The Mississippi sticker expired in 2003, and she didn't see any other numbers on the sticker.

She could not, however, find the HIN number on the transom. Anyone know where Catalina put the HINs on the 1979 model?

Stephen: Yes, I have the rudder and a nice new tiller, but I ain't ready to start parting her out yet. Stay tuned.

Dan H: TXbigfoot's boat would have to be pretty far gone to be more work than my boat, because mine is completely gutted. I kept the old bulkheads to use as patterns, and I bought a couple sheets of 3/4" marine plywood for new bulkheads. I also bought new teak companionway boards for her from Catalina Direct, but that's about as far as I got with the restoration.

Everything is still intact on "Kite" externally-- ladder, lifelines, fittings, grabrails, etc. She's a tall rig, and some PO must have raced her because she's rigged for a spinnaker with 4 winches, although there was no chute when I bought her.

I am sure that I can use the boat for my project. I will call it a done deal. Now lets talk price. Send me an email. I will contact TXPWD to see what we can do about that.
Dan
look under the cockpit seats for the Hull id. It is usually tucked away in a very weird place.

That registration would be MI for Misssssisssssipppppi (MS for Masssachusssetttts, MC for Michigan, USPS notwithstanding.) The hull number is generally scratched by hand into the gelcoat on the starboard side of the outside of the transom, just below the rub-rail, starting with "CTY". It can be hard to see.

Randall, I checked with TXPWD and they referred me to their website. Would you please look at the site and do a few things to get the boat sold to me. Here is the website

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/boat/owner/titles_and_registration/

Look for the link as followed:
Not Currently Titled and/or Registered Through TPWD.

If you click on this link, it will show you the matrix of what is needed to get the boat sold to me. You will need to try to trace the serial number off the hull on the stern. Look at the previous comment. There will be a couple of forms that will need to be filled out by you as well as you need to ask MI for that letter TXPWD told you about. Lets make this work and let me know what I can do,
Dan

TXbigfoot,

I called Mississippi Parks & Wildlife and was told that titling is voluntary there, and my boat was never titled. It is registered to Douglas Scott, who is the man I bought it from. Kay, the nice lady I spoke with, is going to fax a copy of the registration to me tomorrow at work and also mail a copy to my home in TX. She said some states will accept a fax copy while other want the original, but we'll be covered either way.

So does this mean that you plan to accept my outrageous monetary demands? If so, do you just want the boat, or are you in need of the trailer also? The trailer is not galvanized, and spent some time at the FL coast, but was in plenty good shape to get the boat back to TX from GA. It also made a couple of hops down to Del Rio to my beloved Lake Amistad.

My wife has been trying for two days to send me a couple of photos of the boat & trailer but I haven't received them for some reason. I may give her my password and have her try uploading them directly to this site.

Dave,
Thanks for the info on the registration. When I bought the boat I wondered about the MI vs M1 thing, but it never dawned on me that the letter designations would vary from the USPS abbreviations.

I think we can work out a deal is what that means. I need to get some pictures before the exact money figure goes out and the title is important. I am very very very intereseted in the boat. Depending on what price we end up at, I will at least need the trailer to get the boat to Austin. If the trailer will work for my boat I would be interested in buying it. If your wife wants the picts sent to me directly, then here is my email address
