On a business trip to San Diego I was fortunate to be able to hang out with our former Commodore Jim Baumgart on Indiscipline III, not only on Saturday, but also Monday evening. And I was able to tag along Wednesday evening when Jim's friend and marina neighbor Ken wanted Jim to help bring his S2/8.5m from Mission Bay down to San Diego harbor for some work to be done there. Thanks, Jim. Here are three sketches.

One
...Clouds burn off by afternoon
...Mission Bay ospreys nest on the tallest mast
...A seal glides into the channel
...The ocean swell is now 6-8 feet
...Southwest breeze of 10 knots
...Let's sail down to check the green can in San Diego Bay
...Close hauled out past the kelp beds
...That whalewatching boat is about a month too late
...There's the start for the Round the Coronados race

Two
...The boat is all set to go after work today
...Sun glints off the Pacific
...Spinnaker fills and dumps with each ocean wave
...Light northwest breeze
...Drift back in to the slip
...Past herons, gulls, cormorants, and pelicans
...Waiting hopefully on the bait dock

Three
...Meet over at the S2 in her slip
...Bring her to a San Diego boatyard for new sails
...Small craft warning earlier today
...We make a good 6 knots along the coast
...Past a chorus of seals on the channel marker
...The diesel shakes itself awake
...Into the dock at dusk
...The work can start in the morning
...This sail cover's not needed tonight
...The twenty-eight year old mains'l has drawn its last breath
...Upgrade the equipment for the love of sailing

It was really great having you and I am sorry you don't live closer, you would be great crew on some of the races we do, and a welcome member of Fleet 7 and the San Diego All Catalina Association.

Association members, when you are in town feel free to contact me and go sailing.

Sometimes, John, a well written word is worth a thousand pictures.
