Something cool that Xerox is doing ...

If you go to this web site, www.letssaythanks.com , you can pick out a thank
you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is
currently serving in Iraq . You can ' t pick out who gets it, but it will go
to some member of the armed services.

How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!! This
is a great site.

Please send a card.

It is FREE and it only takes a second.

Rita's posted this link onto our niece's Facebook site, she has hundreds of friends who may (or may not depending on the caprice of teenagers) send lots of these.

Nice thought, as a vet I appreciate stuff like this more than you know.

Great Idea and sentiment Dennis. Another cool holiday present for the troops can be found at the VFW Operation Up-link web site(http://www.operationuplink.org/) contributions to Operation Up-link provides free phone cards for the soldiers so that they can call home.

You may (or may not) have heard of the Blue Star Moms - these are parents (husbands take part too) of men and women in the armed forces. Their purpose it to provide support for the troops overseas. Last year our local group sent over ** 4,000 ** Care packages to the troops. Contents were all donated by individuals and businesses. Troops emailed in their requests for packages for themselves or for others in their troop/platoon or for those they know overseas.

See http://www.bluestarmoms.org

Here's a video of our local group packing the Xmas packages - these people are all volunteers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIs5hXXDP-g

Find a group in your area!

Our son just started his 2nd deployment to Iraq. He is a Sgt in the 3rd Infantry Division, his MOS is a Cavalry Scout. They are the ones in the streets. He is in Baghdad. Please keep him in your thoughts.

Thanks Dennis.

Actually, Dave, our local radio just did a story about that address. Apparently they won't be delivered without a specific name. In fact, the story said, that it actually is slowing the mail down. They are returning them or, if no return address, they're getting pitched. Kinda makess sense, I guess. In this screwed up world we live in, bad guys could send bad things to good people this way.

Ooops, shoulda read Don's post

Sorta like these ones - right? See below. I cut and pasted from one of the other threads. At least my post had something to do with sailing. Funny how the fact that the coasties cut off radio transmission during a declared Pan pan deosn't seem to faze anyone. If you wanna enforce rules, make sure they apply universally. But maybe that's why there is so much discussion about resigning and other articles not related to sailing.

I apologize again for the accuracy of my post and I will edit the comments related to politics when I repost the coasties cutting me out post!

sten

Again - read what some of you have posted that wasn't deleted...

"Our own administration is doing nothing. Why, because of politics, which I will not get into."

"This leading to anti-Americanism and now anti-Canadianism since we are holding hands with you guys on multiple fronts."

"Normally I don't like to mix politics and sailing but this story got to me"

"i know, go vote.
i do.
but, they talk the talk, they just don't walk it.who will stand up and redirect our country??"

"peoples republic of illinois
former governor finally went to jail.
need one more cell for the present one."

Gentlemen, I receive emails from people who disagree with me, (... and they are seldom erudite!); please bash off line. Thanks

The problem with political posts is that we are all so ignorant and naive that we cannot actually add to the knowledge base through our opinions, and that makes upsetting others who disagree with us pointless, which quickly becomes mean-spirited. One thing I am certain of is that we would all have a great time sailing with any of us, and would welcome any of us to be our guest given the chance.

Merry Christmas guys.

The following was posted to the SF Sailing Yahoo group.

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I 'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
'SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE';

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS.'

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, 'CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.'

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.'

This poem was written by a Marine. The following is his
request. I think it is reasonable.. ...

PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to
as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon
and some credit is due to our U.S. service men and women
for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's
try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe.
Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead,
who sacrificed themselves for us. Please, do your small
part to plant this small present from afar so far ahead.
merry Christmas to all in the Air Force-Army-USMC- Navy-may
God be with you.
