Picked up a new main this week from Bartlett Sails in Austin. John has been doing R & D on mains using 2 J-24's for comparison sailing. My main is a result of his research - it's loose footed and has a large roach. We ran it for the first time yesterday in the last of our Fall Series and we just ran away from the fleet in all 3 races - it's awesome! My old main is for sail - it won the TR Nationals on Lake Cheney.

Frank, I don't think it's the C22 - he designed a new computer program for the J-22 a few years back and North sails (temporarily) bought his loft to get it!
Derek - I've been thinking about getting a new main... what are the dimensions of the new main (hopefully I don't have to sign an NDA or something ..). The large roach doesn't get hung up on the backstay or topping lift when tacking/gybing?
Bill, Sorry I can't give you the dimensions but the luff and foot are class legal. It has a large roach which extends about 6" aft of the backstay but doesn't hang up in light air if you ease the mainsheet about 4" as you go into the tack. It also has new hi-tech mast slugs made of hi-impact plastic coated with silicone. John said that they would last forever. In addition it is full battened with the battens increasing in width from top to bottom. The only problem so far is that the new slugs won't slide through the mast gates and I don't know whether I can get them ground down enough.
Hi Derek. How much $$ do want for the sail? I've been sailing a cruising sail and have been wanting a full battened / loose footed racing main. Had racing sails with my previous C22 (and a mylar 150, too). Also, what is the condition of the sail and how old is it? Thanks. Happy racing!!!
Derek: If you have the famous Joe Whats-his-name mast gate plates, when I had trouble getting slugs to pass between them, I found that one (instead of the pair) worked fine. I'd try that before messing with your high-tech slugs.
When you are ready to replace your 150% genoa with a new one to match your Bartlett main, please let me know. I'll be looking for a good used one soon. BTW, a year or two ago, the C-22 Nationals were held in Texas and a new set of Bartlett sails went to the gold fleet winner of that event.
