well, after an 11-month absence Enka once again has a companionway surrounded by teak rather than masking tape. I was told the wood should be really dry before refinishing it, so 11 months in a garage, the last month-and-a-half in 100-degree days should do it. Sand, teak cleaner, teak brightner, sand, etc. 3-coats of Cetol light. and now on the boat as of Sunday. I had pre-made plugs by cutting disks from a dowel and finishing one side of each with Cetol (not hard, if you employ child-labor; just kidding, I stuck a bunch of disks to a stick with double-sided tape and brushed on the Cetol). then after installing the boards I glued the disks in place with caulk and viola, done. Of course now the slide boards and grabrails are screaming for TLC. I'll remove the slideboards but do the grabrails in place.
The engine cover (actually the bulkhead between the diesel and the Q-berth) was off so I could patch the jagged hole where the old electrical panel was and the few holes drilled/hacked to route cables. After some contemplating, I squared the holes with the table saw, patched them with various size marine plywood and covered the whole area with teak veneer (sorry, forgot to take puctures). These bulkheads I finished with teak oil. now the other bulkheads are begging for teak oil too.
let's see

fix the c-rings on the head pump (in case you are not familiar with the marine heads, the disk that is at the other end of the handle is held in place with a c-ring on either side. the original stainless rings are long gone and can't buy them anymore, so every 9-12 months the top one corrodes away and the pump stops pumping. now, by some divine intervention, it is always the top c-ring that breaks, if the bottom one ever broke I'd be in deep doo-doo)

install new battery charger (old one died a while back, taking a battery with it)

general clean up

now I am ready for the first "cruise" in 2 years. we are sailing 25mi to New Bern to provide transportation and accomodations to a friend participating in the MS bike ride there. (more on the cruising forum)
