Does anyone removes the steering wheel for easy in and out access? I am thinking about buying Edson's wheel storage mount but I was wondering if anyone came out with a cheaper solution since the Edson kit is over $125.00.
I remove the wheel when cruising and use the Edson storage pin. I don't recall what I paid for it ten years ago.
Moving the wheel eases the process of a daily swim while cruising, which keeps the crew refreshed... especially in the very cold waters of the North Channel.
Thanksfor your response. I will end up buying one, eventhough I think the storage pin is overprice. On the 250, with the split backstay, it is very difficult to get in and out of the water without being a contortionist. Where on the railing do you have yours installed?
I don't have the stern seats and have mine mounted on the top of the starboard aft stanchion, which is a two legged stanchion loop with an angular top.
I also have the quick nut.
Yes, Edson prices are steep but they do have good products.
I should add here, that I've been critical of the Edson small boat steering system but I've also a record of saying not because of the quality of parts used. The problem really is that the small boat system just isn't up to the demands of the large rudder needed on the 250.

If your split backstay is mounted on the transom you might consider a modification done by some, that originally came on my boat. The stays are mounted to the Cat seats and thereby eliminating the necktie problem when getting on and off the boat or around the wheel. You might try a search on the forum for Backstay mods. It sure is a lot cheaper than the Edison storage system.
I considered doing the backstay modification but I would have to also modify my bimini since the split stays go through the center of the bimini. Thanks for your input.
