I had heard they were making a few changes, I wrote Catalina hopping they would send me a flyer or something but I never heard from them. Big changes on the outside with opening ports, I can't wait to see the inside of this baby!
Thanks for the link to the 2008 MK II, very interesting. Not sure if the rigging has been tuned yet but as is it has reverse mast bend (normally not desirable).
The comments suggest a new mast and the spreaders seem to show changes (lighter). The back stay is not split and seems to anchor offset to port though I'm not sure this is a change from the 2007 model.
When first reading there were mast changes, I anticipated seeing a set of reverse diagonal stays as I've long felt they would be the way to enhance a 250, yielding much easier tuning to obtain prebend that is so hard to achieve on the 250 and allowing the use of a backstay tensioner that would provide a lot better power tuning flexibility... but not so.
As to the forward hatch change, I'll reserve comments until after seeing. Crucial to cruising with the 250 is management of the ground tackle and the flat non skid area provided by the hatch is vital. If that is changed to a hatch cover that does not have non skid or doesn't sit flush to deck, I'd be concerned that this change would be undesirable for any one who uses ground tackle regularly.
As to the addition of side ports... they would be nice for a slipped boat where a cross wind provides a bit of ventilation. For those who trailer sail, lay on a mooring or go to anchor, they might be more of a maintenance liability than benefit.
I'm sorry Catalina has gone to the Euro-style "windows", as we've already seen on a couple of their bigger models. I always felt Catalina kept just enough of a classic style that their boats remain reasonably good-looking as they get longer in the tooth... (like the C-25.) Windows are a major styling component, and IMHO, they're getting a bit trendy now, and are losing that "Catalina look." But then I'm a certified curmudgeon...
I think this is a good time to bring up a topic I've been thinking about for awhile. In the Technical Tips section there is an article Catalina 25 and 250 Specifications from Bill Holcomb. It's a good article comparing the Catalina models.
A similar article is needed comparing C250 changes over the years. Things that come to mind: Stern Rail Seats Self-Tailing Winches Single Backstay vs. Split Backstay Propane vs. Butane Stoves Water-Ballast Rudder vs. Winged-Keel Rudder
I volunteer to gather the information and write the article. The hard part is finding out which hull number or model year the change was made. I will work with the C250 Tech Editors and association officers for topics and ideas. I think the forum users could reply from a survey and send me an e-mail? The article will take awhile and will only be as accurate as the responses from the users.
Good idea Russ. I suspect Arlyn already knows all of the changes, and probably the year they took place, though he might not know the hull numbers where the changes occured. You might want to quiz Arlyn before attempting a member survey. I'd be happy to answer a survey on the subject if you decide to do one.
Thanks for the replies. I didn't mean to highjack Wil's post. I'll do some thinking and post a separate topic. In the meantime, if anyone has more ideas send me an e-mail. Russ #793
