I came across a good deal on an unused Lewmar #7. Problem is it was purchased some time in the past by the PPO of a boat in my marina, so we don't know how old it is and there is no paperwork with it. It is spotless and looks like it was bought yesterday, but. . . Does anybody know how to tell the difference between the new/old models of the Lewmar 7? I would also appreciate a copy of the owner's manual if anybody has one. I found some stuff on the Lewmar site, but it is not the actual manual. Then there will be installation. I plan to install it on the cabin top, starboard side, and lead main and jib halyards back to it. I can see that I will have to dis-assemble it to some extent to mount it, and I am not sure how to do that. Any advice would be welcome. Got to be a Lewmar authority in this crowd.
There's really not a manual per se with the new ones ... I was faced with the same dilemma and found a web-site with pics on how to do this. Like a lot of other things it's really not as hard as it first appears... harder to describe without pictures! Anyway, here goes: there is a small ring around stem that the winch handle fits into. Pry the end of the ring over the top then sort of 'unwind it'. Once you've done that the winch housing slips right off the top. Be careful when you do this because there are four spring-loaded arms (2 on top and 2 on the bottom) that engage the teeth of the gear and the little springs can come popping out. Just do it slowly and put your fingers over the little arms. Since your winches aren't mounted yet just do this for practice in a clear area where you can find them if they fall out, then you'll see what I mean. After that, just get some winch grease and grease it up and install. Use the base for your drilling template.
I'm not an authority, but I did do what you're planning to do by taking the #7 off the mast and putting it on the cabin top. First, I suggest you buy a Lewmar winch repair kit-$25 at WM. It comes with instructions like you are looking for. Then follow Bill's excellent directions above.
My biggest problem installing the winch was not drilling the holes in the cabin top straight up and down so the bolts wouldn't seat correctly. A little re-drilling fixed that easily. Lots of sealant in the holes and under the winch pad finished up the job. I found it a very easy project and I don't consider myself to be very "handy".
Some guys here would suggest drilling the holes over-sized, filling with epoxy, and re-drilling to the correct size before mounting the winch. Good Luck!

If I remember correctly the pawls should only get oil, not grease, or they will stick but grease all the other internal parts. Order extra springs now, those little suckers go flying and are almost impossible to find. Do over drill and epoxy the cabin top bolt holes or you will crunch the liner when tightening the bolts, there is a hollow cavity. Position the winch so the bolts miss the galley light. Actually on my boat it was the triple rope clutch bolts, forward of the winch, that got close to the light. Although you shouldn't have to worry about hitting a light on the starboard side . But that side is hollow too.

Thanks, Don. I had come across that site earlier, but I guess I missed the part about the difference in the winches. I have it figured out now and can tell that I have one of the older models. Still, it works fine and the price was right. I'll just have to be VEWWY Careful about not losing any parts.
I forgot to mention that the Lewmar guide did say to use a silicone sealant and NOT polysulfide based sealant(I think.. all I remember really is that it is an ingredient in 3M4200. This is because the base is plastic.
Don't know if this helps; but when I disassemble my winches for maintainence, I use a wide, soft plastic, container that I made from an old clothes basket to keep from losing the small parts and keeping the big parts from going over the side. I cut the sides of the basket down so that they are just about the same hight as the winch and I cut a hole in the bottom just big enough to fit over the winch then I duct tape the whole thing down to the deck while I'm working on the winch. In the case of a new installation you would have to install the core of the winch to the deck first, then use the basket while assembling the winch.
