I have a rail mount Bar-B-Q and, if I could do it over, would go with a fishing pole mount. I find that the rail mount has to be really tight, and dig into the rail, to have a solid grip.
Randy, Have you tried a friction tape to give it a better grip? We have a large grill, but have not had an opportunity to use it. I've been planning to use some sort of friction tape to mount it with, but simply haven't had time yet.
David, I have tried electrical tape and that did not work. The Bar-B-Q leverages the mount because it hangs a ways out there. I think a mount to a vertical post would be superior to a horizontal post. Not sure what I will do next. MAybe I can clamp it to the rudder and use the grill as a hard link.
Randy how bout the stern rail seat that has a vertical post in the back .
If you have the magma grill I agree the mount is not that great it looks like its made to come on and off with every use ,(where are you going to put a greasey dripy grill at the end of the day !). I leave mine on all the time
The "rail mount" really needs to be mounted on a vertical post to keep from slipping. I mount mine on the aft rail, there's just enough room for the clamp to fit between the swim ladder and the aft rail.
I had my Magma mounted on the stern rail, horizontal rail, of a previous boat for 25 years, it never slipped. Must be something about the newer mount clamps. It's a great grill, still going strong since 1979.
This is where I attached my barbie; very secure at this point. I can cook from the catbird seat since my solar panel is mounted out behind the starboard seat.
