Has anyone out there retrofitted a marine head and a holding tank on a 250? The Porta Potty requires too frequent emptying to be practical for some of the longer trips we are planning. (and my wife hates it)! Willy
On my new... ummmm... you know... boat, I got a Dometic head that has a china bowl that's attached on top of a 9-gallon holding tank--no convoluted installation or waste hose between the bowl and tank. It's installed with a Y-valve to a pumpout fitting and a mascerator. (I won't be going to Canada.) I run it off the fresh water tank instead of salt water, for vastly reduced odor potential. Fewer hoses and fewer connections equals fewer problems. So far, I like it better than any marine head I've used.
Yes it has been done and I'm sure someone will post about their project. Not sure what your wife does not like about the porta-potti but I installed an MSD (Marine Sanitation Device) type of porta-potti with a 5 gallon tank and plumbed for pumpout. The 5 gallon tank is equivalent to a 15 gallon traditional holding tank because porta-pottis are very efficient with water use. The pumpout means we never take the unit out of the boat, we use the same pumpout facilities as the marine head users. It is another option for you that doesn't require placing a tank, with additional weight, in the stern of your 250. Here is a link to my post on the topic:
I agree I like the pump out setup , We have a 9 gallon holding tank in the stern . I think installed by the factory . we also use fresh water for the flush , we do alot of 2 to 3 day trips you can maybe get too weekends out of it for 2 people .
I would like a bigger tank maybe double the size so you can definantly get two weekends out of it , also a tank moniter is key if you dont want to spend the trip wondering if this will be the last flush . this is our 3rd year and we finaly got it down with no smell . (fresh water flush and a new hose to the tank .)sea land has a heavy duty hose its white dont use the older black hose . you need a heat gun to soften the hose to make the connections.
peggy hall has a book on the catalina owners site . I would learn whats involved and install it yourself , its not that hard and if everything is new it will be a day in the park (insted of the dump). all the big boats have them so once you learn how they work its just another system on the boat .
I just finished the installation. The wife refused to use a used porta potti and she got tired of using the bucket. I wish I'd thought of using the heat gun to soften the hose, I had a hard time getting the hose far enough on the fittings to get a hose clamp on it. I installed a 9 gallon Todd tank, used sealand hose and have a Raritan head. No Y valve for now but may add it later if I take the boat to the coast.
