If every C-250 owner Wing keel or WB whom has an IDA rudder would post to this topic there likes, dislikes, experiences then those who want to know could pull this topic up and hopefully the information they want is right there. I know there are more than myself and Willy out there who have IDA rudders.
I replaced my third generation rudder with the IDA kick-up and couldn't be happier. The main reason I did it was the narrow water at the head of the bay where my slip is but I have noticed a great deal less weather helm since putting her on. I do sail in the ocean a bit and have heard some caveats regarding the strength of the rudder. Only once have I heard of a major problem (the rudder snapping) and if pressed for a guess as to the reason I would say the owner may have sailed for some time with the rudder not fully extended which puts enormous stress not only on the rudder but the pintles and gudgeons. One bit of advice I would give if you go the IDA route is to order it with their tiller set-up. Using your own tiller requires some fabricating to install a good system for locking the rudder into position (up/down). IMHO, overall the performance as well as the additional accessability the rudder has provided has made it a worthwhile investment. Willy
I got an email back from IDA today stating that the cost is $599.00 plus shipping, shipping is about $47.00. This is a complete assembly, which means it comes with rudder, rudder head and tiller. There is no price difference is you choose to not get a tiller. Also there is no option for a kick-up rudder "without" a gas strut. The rudder assembly comes with pintles installed, this is based off of measurements you supply us.
Wow...sounds like they got tired of people ordering it without the tiller and then complaining about the needed fabrication to get the thing to work with your existing one! The gas strut was not even available two years ago when I got mine and it sounds like it's only about $100.00 more to have both that and the tiller. Sounds like a good deal!
I installed an IDA kick-up rudder on my 2003 250 WB with wheel steering last year. I installed the IDA rudder because I found the boat to be very unforgiving with the stock rudder. I felt the boat had a tendency to round-up even under what I considered to be relatively benign conditions. My conclusion was that the stock rudder was too short and too little of it was left in the water as the boat heeled. The kick-up version seemed to be the logical choice for a water ballast model with swing keel.
I'm very happy with the improvement in sailing and motoring characteristics. IDA's service is very good and ditto for the quality of their product.
I'm pretty far away from a new rudder. I just got the boat and have a score of other things that need doing. That being said; I bought a rudder from Ida for a gaff rigged catboat several years ago. The owner, name is Joel I believe, couldn't have been any better to deal with. A good product, fair price, and excellent service responding to my 101 questions.
