Yesterday I replaced a lot of my swing keel hardware. I know I'm supposed to remove the keel winch handle adapter from the old winch and install it on the new winch, but I cannot figure out how to remove it. Catalina Direct's handbook says that there are two allen screws holding it on but there are none to be seen on mine. I tried just turning it counter clockwise all the way and you can see it loosen itself from the brake, but it only goes so far. There must be a way to remove it from the seperate brake piece. Anyone have any recommendations on how to remove it? Here is a photo:
Thanks!

It probably wasn't stainless steel and most likely being the original 25 year old winch, it just corroded over the years. I'm going to try an allen wrench inside that small hole, but I doubt it would catch anything. I should have taken a photo of the new winch. It appears that you simply thread this adapter right on the end. The handle shaft of the new winch is just a long threaded bolt with two flat sides for allen screws to tighten onto. The problem is, I don't have any allen screws on mine unless they are inside the bushing, but there is no way to access that part right now that I can see. I plan to try putting the part of the shaft that is directly behind the frame into a vice and trying to unscrew it that way. I'm sure some others have replaced their keel winches and swapped the adapter.
When I replaced my winch a few years ago, I tried everything to get the adapter off, to no avail: heating the @#$%^ out of it, penetrating oils, and brute force. Call Catalina Direct and have them send you a new adapter.
My first thought was why doesn't a new winch come with all new parts, why would CD expect you to fasten an old adapter to a new winch? Sounds like one of those frustrating things that delays a project a couple days or weeks .
Yeah and it's too bad they only sell that adapter with a new handle for $60. I emailed a technician at the Catalina factory asking about this adapter to see if it's available; the parts department wasn't sure.
I've taken the adaptor off when I reconditioned my winch, seems like it simply unscrewed... but my memory is vague in that area. I think I have some photos floating around. I'll take a look and see if I can find one that gives some guidance.
After disassembling the winch as much as possible and trying to remove the adapter, it does not look like it is possible with the original winch. The newer winch and adapter look different and I do not think the old adapter is compatible with the newer winch crank shaft.
It appears the only option is to buy the new adapter and winch handle from Catalina Direct for $60, so that is what I ended up doing. Sounds like an awful lot for something so simple, but oh well. On the bright side, now I will have a nice new handle to match my new winch instead of my rusty old one.
