My Garmin 172C GPS just came in the mail :) I'm going through mounting locations and options and wanted to see what other people have done. Last year I installed an Edson Straight Pedestal Guard (cut down by 6" at the good suggestion of some others on this forum). I'm not keen on the idea of adding a swing-out arm from the cabin because of the restrictions it offers when running in seas, and also because it tends to be something for folks to grab when heading into/out of the cabin. Has anyone used Edson's platform mount (831-95-100)? Am I better off flush mounting it on the bulkhead? Thanks!
Bob, I have that Edson mount and like it very much. I have a GPSMAP492 chartplotter which I have also connected to my VHF for full DSC functions. I'll take a picture and post it this weekend.
Bob, we have the edson mount, and a pod for the depth/knot (st40). The GPS (Garmin 192C) is on a Ram Mount with the power and antenna wires running down inside the edson tube. Having the GPS at the wheel now seems like the only valuable place to locate it. The Ram mount allows it to be swung around so crew on the port side can play with it.
Having it at the helm allows easy access to all of the features. My personal opinion is that it's a tool for the helm and should be at the helm.
It gives the admiral additional confidence at the helm too. Big plus!
I promise this is my final question: how did you seal the holes you drilled in the guard rail to keep water from running down inside? I'll only have to do one since my chartplotter has an internal antenna.
Bob, I used rubber grommets and clear silicone sealer on the holes. The internal antenna will save a lot of hassle running coax and installion.
You can hook up the GPS to your VHF so that you can transmit your id if your vhf has that feature. We use it to call our buddies and provide our position at the same time, cool feature. Paul
OK, here are some photos of my pedestal setup. This one shows the pedestal guard, an Edson 4 cup holder, a fold up table that I made using the Edson hardware kit and the Edson instrument platform:
Here is a closer view of the GPS on the mount. I mounted it offset to starboard to leave room for some type of holder that I can put a handheld VHF, cell phone, etc in:
Here is the underside showing the cable going into the pedestal guard. The mount is well suited for this. I connected the GPS to my VHF for full DCS capabilities. The blue GPS cover is actually a “Binnacle Buddy” which I use to provide more weather protection for the GPS unit. I wish I could sew because it would be easy to make a cover out of Sunbrella:
That’s it. I am very happy with the quality of Edson components. For me the pedestal guard is a great place for adding components to make the boat and cockpit more functional and comfortable.
