Help, the bolts from the top gudgeon worked loose and fell out. How can I put them back in? Is there a way to get your hand inside of the transom to replace the nuts on the bolts?
Doug, I think we're a bit weary on this one. I'd hit "Search" (above and right on this screen) and type in "gudgeon" or "gudgeons" Feel free to ask away if the answer isn't contained in the search results.
The Quick answer is, you will need to cut a hole in the transom on the cockpit side to get to the top gudgeon nuts. The hole is easily repaired by installing one of those round screw in ports. Or you may be lucky and just need to replace the screws if the nuts are laid into the fiberglass. I would definately try that first.

Mount a Beckson screw in deck plate (six or 8 inch) and you will be amazed on how much effort you will save in getting to the screws (which need to backed up with really big fender washers) as well as wiring for an Autohelm, etc. etc. etc.
If the bolts just worked themselves loose, they should just screw back in. The bolts screw into the threaded backing plate. However, if they sheared, as mine did, you need to do major work.
As stated, you need to search this site for complete details. But, you need to install an inspection (deck) plate in the cockpit to access the upper gudgeon backing plate. Then, you must grind and pry out the backing plates which are glassed onto the hull. Then you must drill out the holes in the hull and backing plates and install larger (3/8") screws with washers and nylon locknuts. It took me about 3 full days over the course of 2 weeks to complete the job. Get a Dremel to do the cutting, grinding, and drilling.
