It continues to be a long and drawn out winter here in the Midwest, but the new sailing season is now just around the corner. With that thought in mind, what are you doing to prepare yourself and your crew for the forthcoming season?

Hours at the gym
Miles on the treadmill
Snow shoveling
12oz curls

Let’s hear it.

Bowflex and 3-5 mile walk/snowshoe per day. I sub 2 hours of shoveling for the bowflex when circumstances warrant.

Hockey two to three nights per week. Snow shoveling every day - sometimes twice a day. Occasional cross country skiing.

I have been doing 12 oz. curls, but when I feel real ambitious I go up to 16 oz.

Actually, I am getting to get back on my mountain bike. 8-10 miles a day will help the legs, the lungs, and my stamina.

I do ALOT of solo-ing and I need to get my heafty carcas onto a bike and the gym as soon as possible. I have read alot of stories, and have bore witness one case where a sailor had a heart attacks at sea. In that case boat washed up onto my in-laws beach, and police rescue passed by us pulling a gurny behind a quad. I am only 34, but I should start taking better care of myself. We all should. Great topic.

Matt - Be careful with the bike. I rode mine for the first time in months. I thought I was going to have a heart attack, not prevent one!
