On my 1990 I found a grey barrier coat under the anti fouling which I believe is factory original. Can anyone confirm that? Also I have a few area requiring touch up, is a compatible material available?
I dry store the boat now so no bottom paint is on the boat but I do want to maintain the barrier.
Doug, The barrier coat was applied by Catalina. It was manufactured by Glidden and is called Blister Guard. It's no longer available. One product I recommend looking at is Interlux's Watertite epoxy. Others with more experience might know of something less expensive.
My new 1988 C25 came from the dealer with bottom paint and barrier coat. I believe this was a factory option. It would be hard to tell unless you talked to Catalina and gave them your hull number. They should be able to tell if it left the factory with bottom paint.
I'm no expert but I suspect you have an ablative bottom paint since that would be the least expensive factory option paint. If so, any barrier coat used for ablative paint would work for you.
Check West Marine's catalog. They have excellent explanations of hull paint, barrier coat, what to mix and not mix, etc. There is also a wealth of info in the archives regarding this issue. Just search bottom paint or barrier coat.
