My point exactly. My navigation extends the gamot from a color chart plotter to a stubby pencil.
The bottom line has already been mentioned. If your only day saiing you probably don't need a lot of navigation equipment. The only reason I bought the chart plotter was because I do cruise long distances, and I almost ran into an island in dense fog. Radar would have been nice but too expensive and I didn't want equipment that large on my boat.
John, your decison is probalby the correct one. Learn to sail and have fun. If you think you might want to cruise, learn chart navigation and then maybe get a gps or chart plotter. Again, my only intent was to point out the safety factor of a chart plotter.
Re a GPS, I have a small color handheld. I really like it cuz it shows me where I have sailed that day, how fast I am going and my location-if I have to call for assistance. But do I really need one. Probably not. Its just a fun toy. Just like my boat! Good luck
We really consider our GPS (Garmin 192C) a must have. Here in SoFla, there are a lot of those underwater stop signs, and the GPS gives us a pretty good idea of the depth in front of the boat with enough time to avoid the sleeping policemen too!
We routinely check our GPS/Chart/reality at every opportunity, that includes noting our position relative to charted markers (particularly those that are fixed, eg, not bouys). And when we are in transit, we routinely will sight off against known shore features with both the chart and the gps lat/long. There have been times when we found the gps was about 30' out (Pole was on our stbd bow and gps showed it to port!) But in each case, we had already determined the error by cross checking as mentioned above, 20 mins later the accuracy was back to normal.
