So, I picked up all the flotsam and jetsam at the PO's house today. He gave me the antenna for the VHF. The Previous PO (the original owner) decided that he needed an 8 foot whip antenna on the top of his mast. Can I readily change the antenna to something that might attract a little less lightning or is the antenna type tied to the radio????

You can change it out. I use a 3' "stubby" antenna from Shakepeare on the top of my mast. It is a VHF antenna made for sailboats. Get yourself a West Marine catalog. You can learn a lot from it even if you buy elsewhere. Also, search the archives here and you will find many posts on antennas and how to mount them.
