I got an inflatable and am wondering where I'm supposed to put the ID (T/T Bamboo)? I know there are specific regulations as to where registration numbers go on a power boat, but not sure with a life raft.
Thanks, Dave

Most people I know attach their numbers to an aluminum plate that they then hook onto the safety lines. They can be removable, they are only required on the inflatable when a motor is attached, that way you can keep them safe and will not get destroyed when storing the inflatable.

So it doesn't matter which side you display them on? Dave

The same rules apply to a dinghy as to a power boat when it is under "machine" power - outboard or electric. The numbers are displayed on both sides of the bow. Check your state regs for exact placement and letter size.

YES! IF you have attached 43 lb. thrust trolling motor to it as I have done. Moves at 6 knots and runs off of a couple of cheap marine trolling batteries... Got a lot of blank stares when I went to go register it as a motor vessel...

If it is powered, it must be registered - unless of course you have a documented vessel and the dink is T/T.... Tender to mothership.

Documentation of a vessel does NOT cover the vessel's tender or dinghy. These craft fall within the jurisdiction of the motorboat numbering laws of the state of principal use.

The question as to whether an inflatable needs separate registration numbers probably differs in each municpilaity that controls the waters that you sail.

Having been out of sailing for over 20 years since moving to the Washington, DC area (from Long Island, NY), when i bought my boat, I decided to take the DC Safety Boat Course (though I already had a Power Squadron Boating certificate from years ago). Since i was keeping my boat in the Potomac River area controlled by the DC Harbor Police, I took there safety course (4 sessions and a test). I asked the police officer providing the course about similar issue - If I use an inflatable when I go sailing (tender to the boat) does it need separate numbers. he indicated I could use the same numbers if only used as a tender to my sailboat but add a "T" to the number and I should be okay. Now I have not seen this discussed in any of the DC literature nor I have asked any other of the DC Harbor officials but this is what i was told during the course.
