Now I am one that certainly understands that we participate in a sport/hobby/interest that by the nature of it can be, and is sometimes expensive. However, the prices that I am finding for simple, plastic, 12v fans really seems excessive. I am planning to install 3 on my boat with 1 in the quarter berth, 1 in the main salon, and 1 in the V berth. If I buy the turbo fans through WM they run around $59-$69 depending on whether they are on sale or not. Do any of you know of a source of fans in the 12v arena that are more reasonable? I reall don't want to spend $180 to over $200 just to move the air around.
Mike Grand Lake, OK N.O. Catalina 25 #4849 In my opinion 75% of the earth is water for a reason. That's why I sail.
I got 2 12v DC Fans from walmart, I think they were on a rollback for 7.86. They come with Clamp mounts and hard mounts, they osculate and throw a good amount of air around the cabin. They are plastic, and can be replaced for the cost. They are located back in the Automotive section, they had a whole shelf of them. 6" blades black in color, power swich can be mounted also.
I installed mine on the bulkheads, and wired them into the forward birth lights. 10 min. deal, they also will run on just the solar panel I have for the boat, Its a 5w panel.
Ditto that look in most any automotive section at your local box retailer. I found one for like 9 bucks last week. Yeah they are cheap and we shall see how long they last. They mak a fair bit of noise for a little fan but not too bad. I may go see if they have any others tonight as fans will be dissapearing for fall. I saw an O2 cool fan last night at a walgreen store my crew was servicing but they were closed. I have been looking to day at my local Walgreens and have yet to find it. This little fan was sweet ran like 10 hours on its own rechargable battery. Not sure of the price. If I find it I will post it.
Thanks for the info. Wallyworld hadn't even occurred to me. I won't really mind the noise. The 110v fan we have in the cabin now is not all that quiet either. My sister inlaw has the expensive turbo fans in their 39' Island Packet and they aren't quiet either.
I have found that Wallyworld also has 5200 and 4200 at the cheapest prices, Now if they would sell bottom paint, and sailboat hardware :) The store on 71st should have everything you are looking for. I don't think the ones I got are all that noisey, Its a blade moving air. Maybee I will take the covers off and sharpen the plastic blades.......Are you installing the furler? Keep cool and drink allot of water this weekend, Its gonna be HOT.
The power consumption is pretty important, those big auto fans seem to drain the battery much quicker than the Hella jet fans. We like our Hella's, and several people have mounted them on the access covers. Just do a search for Hella on this site.
looking at the website, the Turbofan looks like a better deal than the Jet fan. The Turbofan has a service life of 5000 hours and the jetfan has a service life of 1500 hours. So for a bit more, you get more life. Personally I like woman fanning me while they feed me grapes. Cheers.
Well, I took Capri's advice and bought the Wallymart ones. Even if they aren't that good, they were only $8.62 each. Can't go to wrong with 3 for $25.00. Also, I have two marine batteries running my electronics. I think that is enough for now. I will keep tabs on the usage to see how they work out, but I am spending most of my time at the dock now any way, and using shore power.
Capri: Yep we are going to install the furler tomorrow. Also a windex, new hasthead sheaves, port curtains, the fans, and I have some spray for the sail track on the main. I have allowed 2 days (Saturday and Sunday) to be able to get all the work done. I think that should be enough. JB will be helping me take down and put up the mast, so I think we are set.
Oh I almost forgot, plenty of gatoraide, water, and of course a couple sixes of Corona. Except for the Limes I think we are set
Personally, I'm more interested in the power draw vs performance instead of price. Anyone know of the amps required vs the performance of these alternatives?
BTW, I have two fans now installed by a PO. I couldn't tell you what kind or their specs right now but I'm on the hard about to rewire and am interested in every one's opinions on this.
Quote from Don Casey' "Sailboat Electrics Simplified" (Pg 33)
"but Hella offers energy efficient fans that move almost as much air, yet draw only 0.2amps. This reduces the daily drain on the battery by as much as 24amp-hours (per fan) in hot weather."
An update: I ran one of the $8.62 Wallyworld fans this morning while working in the cabin. I was checking it for noisey operation and also wanted to check the fan motor to see if there was any heat build up. It ran as pretty quiet as far as I am concerned and according to the motor stamp, it is a .8 watt draw. Since we are on a lake and we may be out for only a day sail, staying overnight at the slip this type will work for now. If we begin staying out overnight using only the 12v system, that may change, but for now, they seem pretty good for the cost.
